The Economic Affairs Department of the Netherlands Embassy in Pretoria has two internship positions available for the period 2 September 2019 to 28 February 2020.

Work Environment

The Netherlands Embassy in Pretoria is a dynamic organisation, which is actively involved in the economic, political and cultural fields in South Africa. The Embassy has an integrated and cross-cutting approach with strong collaboration between colleagues in these departments.

South Africa and the Netherlands share robust economic ties. South Africa is the most sophisticated economy on the African continent. There are more than 350 Dutch companies established in the country, ranging from start-ups to multinationals. The Embassy supports the activities of these companies and proactively stimulates trade and investment in the identified focus sectors of Transport & Logistics, Water, Agriculture, Life Sciences & Healthcare and Renewable Energy. Entrepreneurship, Science & Technology and Smart Cities are important cross cutting themes in the Embassy’s activities.

Job Description

This internship position will focus on supporting the work of the Economic Affairs Department in the focus sectors. This includes trade promotion and facilitation; business development; the writing of economic reports; organizing events, missions and visits; attending and reporting back on briefings and seminars; assisting with general administrative activities and relationship management. 

The internship is intended to give students a good idea of ​​the work of a diplomatic mission and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Interns are closely involved in the day-to-day operations of the Embassy. The Embassy is looking for two interns with a hands-on, flexible and pro-active mentality, good written expression in English and Dutch, and a result-oriented working approach. Candidates should have an interest in economic developments in South Africa.
 

Intern Profile

Requirements to be eligible for consideration:

  • A relevant tertiary education (WO or HBO) in a field that’s relevant to the work of the Economic Department (incl. business, economics, technical studies on one of the sectors mentioned above);
  • Masters degree would be an advantage;
  • In possession of Dutch nationality and registered with a Dutch educational institution;
  • Good command of English and Dutch, both orally and in writing;
  • A team player with a flexible and serious (hands-on) work attitude;
  • Strong analytical and organizational skills;
  • Commercial / business interest;
  • Affinity with and awareness of the economic and political developments in South Africa.
